Tips for a High Quality Essay

  1. Writing a good essay takes time. Be sure you meet the eligibility requirements (e.g. grade point average, etc.) before you begin to work on the application/essay.
  2. Start early. Give yourself enough time to do a thorough job in preparing the essay. This may involve thinking about any community, school and/or church activities/involvement in which you have participated.
  3. Be clear and concise. Put yourself in the essay reader’s shoes and evaluate if your essay merits a scholarship award.
  4. Proofread and edit your essay. Have someone knowledgeable and objective (instructor, counselor or advisor, friend, etc.) to proofread your essay for content and language usage. Ask your proofreader to look for points, such as “Has the essay question been answered?” “What adjustments could be made to sharpen the essay?” and “Are the grammar, punctuation, and spelling correct?”
  5. Presentation is important. Your essay should be presented in a neat and attractive format that is easy for the Committee to review.
  6. Be honest. The information you share will be verified.
